VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

Thank you for volunteering with the Tour of Lawrence. Volunteers are the driving force of any large community event, and your participation makes the Tour of Lawrence possible.

What do volunteers do?

1) Help ensure the safety of racers and spectators by serving as course marshals;

2) Keep the event running smoothly by assisting racers, officials and staff;

3) Serve as the Tour's ambassadors to racers and to the community.

Here are some of the positions we need your help with:

COURSE MARSHAL (300 shifts) -- Radio-equipped course marshals, on a course with sell-placed barricades to motor and pedestrian traffic, are the primary on-course race-day safety system for a bicycle race. Course marshals' responsibilities include: controlling pedestrian and (if necessary) motor traffic; warning spectators that racers are approaching; warning racers of any temporary hazards; providing info to spectators and racers. But the course marshal's primary job is keeping the course clear.

COURSE BUILDING & MOVING (30 shifts) -- Builders ensure that the course is safe for racers and spectators buy constructing and installing crowd control barricades, traffic control signs, and safety equipment. Most course building shifts are early a.m. or evening shifts--the course equipment will be moved from the KU campus to downtown Lawrence on Saturday night.

OFFICIALS' ASSISTANTS (10 shifts) -- Stand by during race to help officials with just about anything.

REGISTRATION (20 shifts) -- Greet racers and assist with registration and packet pickup.

VOLUNTEER TABLE (10 shifts) -- Greet volunteers and assist with assignments, t-shirts, and radios.

All volunteers receive sandwiches and a 2010 Tour of Lawrence t-shirt, choose your size below.
